Organisation profile

The Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt e.V. (DLR) is the German national research establishment for aeronautics, astronautics, and energy technology within the Helmholtz-Gemeinschaft der Forschungszentren (HGF). According to its profile DLR performs research and development of novel technologies in the space, aeronautics, transport and energy fields. It builds and operates large-scale test facilities, assumes management tasks and trains junior scientists.

The Institute of Atmospheric Physics (DLR-IPA) has long-term experience in in situ airborne measurements of chemical species, aerosols, and meteorological quantities, large-scale modelling of atmospheric dynamics and chemistry, radiative transfer modelling, development and application of tools for passive and active remote sensing. DLR-IPA has many years experience in coordinating international research projects (e.g. POLINAT, TROCCINOX; ATTICA, ECATS, METRIC, QUANTIFY) and participated in numerous international research projects (e.g. PARTEMIS, SCOUT-O3, AMMA, IAGOS, RECONCILE, SHIVA, ACCESS).

The Institute of Aerodynamics and Flow Technology (DLR-AS) has a long experience in the development and application of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and experimental methods as well as in the setup of wind tunnel and flight test campaigns. The institute has participated successfully in several European projects. Comprehensive investigations have been performed in the field of de-icing technologies for hybrid laminar flow wings (HYLTEC).

 Role in the project

DLR contributions to HAIC are as follows.

  • DLR leads SP1 Instrumentation for flight test campaigns and ice wind tunnels and thus WP11 SP coordination
  • DLR-IPA contributes to WP13 Selection of instrumentation for flight test campaigns, and as such support the 2nd F/T campaign in 2015
  • DLR-IPA contributes to WP24 Microphysical properties of the high IWC regions using F/T
  • DLR-AS contributes to WP42 Detection & Awareness Technology Specification
  • DLR-AS contributes to WP44 Development of mixed phase and glaciated icing conditions awareness systems
  • DLR-AS contributes to WP63 Develop ice particles trajectory models
  • DLR will support the Project Coordinator in the strategic and technical management of the project in WP71.
