University of Twente (UTWENTE)

Organisation profile

The University of Twente (UT) is located in Enschede, in the Netherlands. Founded in 1961 the number of Bachelor and Master students has risen to 7,800 students. The University has engineering disciplines like Mechanical and Electrical Engineering and other disciplines like Business Administration and Social Sciences.

The University of Twente will be represented by the chair Engineering Fluid Dynamics (EFD) headed by Prof. H.W.M. Hoeijmakers, which belongs to the department of Engineering Technology.

The group comprises about 20 employees of which 15 are scientific staff, including about 9 PhD students. The group EFD participates in the EU program EXTICE in which the prediction of trajectories and the modelling of the impingement of supercooled large droplets (SLD) is improved. A very important feature here is the forces on droplets and the splashing and bouncing of the droplets.

Role in the project

In WP63 the University of UT will (co-)develop an Eulerian model for the distribution of ice and liquid in the fan and compressor of a jet engine, including the collection efficiency of the fan and compressor blades. In WP64 and WP65 the UT will (co-)develop models for ice particle impingement and accretion for the fan and compressor blades of a jet engine of an aircraft. In WP67, the University of UT will participate in the definition of a validation test case representative of ice-particle accretion phenomena in the compressor stages of a gas turbine and will provide its expertise gained in the frame of the COPA-GT project (Marie-Curie project).
