SP4 High IWC Detection & Awareness Technology

Objectives

The main objective of SP4 is related to the development of glaciated and mixed phase icing conditions detection and awareness technologies (probes or radar) which will comply with the industrial requirements of performance, operability, reliability, weight and cost, and will be able to discriminate the different icing conditions encountered.

Main Activities

One of the main activities of SP4 involves the development of specifications for detection and awareness (probes & Radar) technologies. In addition, within SP4, glaciated and mixed phase icing conditions detection and awareness technologies (probes & radar) are expected to be developed. Finally, the validation of the developed technologies in a representative environment (Icing Wind Tunnel (IWT/T) in WP55, Flight Tests (F/T) in WP23) will be performed.

Main Results

One of the main results of SP4 involves the development of an upgraded on-board weather radar, based on current state-of-the-art X-band airborne weather radar equipment, so as to raise awareness to the flight crew of the encounter of glaciated icing conditions and ultimately to adapt well in advance the flight path to avoid such weather conditions. In addition, 2 – 4 four mixed phase and glaciated icing conditions detectors (based on the selection performed within the project) will be selected in order to alert the flight crew in these particular icing conditions.
