SP5 High IWC Test Capability Enhancement

Objectives

One of the main objectives of SP5 involves the improvement of the test facilities capabilities for mixed phase and glaciated icing conditions. In addition, the calibration of the facilities in order to use a common methodology and instrumentation will be performed within SP5. Finally, SP5 will provide experimental results for the validation of the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) tools, as well as for the assessment of the instrumentation and detectors.

Main Activities

The main activities which are expected to be performed within SP5 involve the development of specifications and target envelopes, the design and manufacture of ice crystal generators and Icing Wind Tunnel (IWT) parts, and the preparation and implementation of tests so as to support the activities of SP1, SP4 and SP6.

Main Results

One of the main results expected to be achieved within SP5 involves the development of improved mixed phase and glaciated icing conditions capability for IWT. In addition, new methodologies and validated instrumentation for calibration will be developed. Finally, within SP5, the performances of the ice detectors will be assessed and the experimental database for CFD model will be created.
