SP6 High IWC Tools & Simulation Development

Objectives

To develop, validate and verify models and tools able to simulate the impact of mixed phase and glaciated icing conditions on aircraft components (mainly engines and probes) in order to support both aircraft design and certification phases. SP6 also performs integrated cross-validation between in-flight measurements (SP2), wind-tunnel measurements (SP5) and model predictions, in order to demonstrate the capability of AMCs (Acceptable Means of Compliance) to reproduce the response of equipment and systems in mixed phase and glaciated icing conditions.

Main Activities

One of the main activities involves the elaboration of models for ice particles trajectory, ice particles impingement, and ice particles accretion. In addition the aforementioned models will be integrated in industrial icing calculation chains. Finally, SP6 will assess the capability of the aforementioned models and tools on representative industrial configurations.

Main Results

The main expected results of SP6 involve the development of common European models for ice particle trajectory, impingement and accretion and the validation of the tools, implemented in industrial environment, for modelling ice particle accretion phenomena.
