SP5 High IWC Test capability Enhancement – 1st year progress

During the first year of the project the following SP5 research activities were performed:

  • Comprehensive literature review on the natural and artificial ice crystals generation.

  • Specifications for Ice Wind Tunnel (IWT) envelopes and ice crystals characteristics have been defined. Even if it is not possible to reproduce in IWT “close to natural” ice crystals, techniques are developed in order to generate ice crystals with different sizes, aspect ratios and crystal densities.

  • Characterization of ice crystals produced the IWT with different instruments and methods is in progress.

  • Improvement and development of ice crystals generators have been carried out. Promising results have been obtained.

In a nutshell, the majority of the SP5 objectives set for the first year of the project have been achieved.

In what follows the significant results of each WP of SP5 are presented.

WP51 : SP5 Coordination

WP52 : Test capability specification

WP53 : Technology ice crystal generation

WP54 : Calibration of test facilities

WP55 : Icing wind tunnel tests for technology validation
