During the third year of the project the following SP5 research activities were performed:
-
Commissioning of the facilities is achieved.
-
Calibration methodology has been released and discussed with icing community.
-
Instrumentation for calibration has been assessed.
- Calibration of the facilities has started and is on-going.
- Assessment of ice detectors developed in SP4 is on-going.
- Test specimens for SP6 validation tests have been defined.
Despite some difficulties and delays, the majority of the SP5 objectives set for the third year of the project are about to be achieved.
In what follows the significant results of each WP of SP5 are presented.
WP51 : SP5 Coordination
Two SP5 meetings have been organized during this third year. These meetings were held in common with SP6 people in order to prepare the future test campaigns. Regular meetings have been put in place to manage the organization of the key TRL3 reviews and the progress of WP5.3, WP5.4 and WP5.5 which are strongly connected.
WP53 : Technology ice crystal generation
WP54 : Calibration of test facilities
-
The calibration methodology has been presented during the HAIC mini-forum in September to the HAIC Advisory Board and discussed. It has been decided to initiate discussion with AC-9C SAE sub-committee to revise ARP5905.
-
The instruments selected for calibration, High Speed Imaging system from Artium and Isokinetic probe from Cranfield University have been assessed at GKN and DGA to cover the largest range of conditions in terms of altitude, speed, temperature and total water content.
-
Calibration of GKN facility is achieved. Calibrations of ESTERLINE and DGA facilities are on-going.
WP55 : Test campaigns
-
Test campaigns for SP4 on ice detectors started at GKN and ESTERLINE.
-
Discussing with SP6 people, it has been agreed to perform 3D tests at DGA with a pitot probe and 2D tests at TUBS with a NACA0012 airfoil.
